Common Mistakes to Avoid When Decorating Your Patio (Part One)

With the arrival of the nice weather, you want to enjoy the outdoor spaces much more than we did during the fall-winter season. If you are one of those who need to redesign their terrace or garden this season to be able to enjoy it much more, you need to consider a series of mistakes that are repeated over the years. To try to make your job a little easier, we summarize the most common mistakes to avoid when decorating outdoor spaces in this article. Enjoy your reading!

Using Inconsistent Decor

It’s important that your patio or deck decor is consistent. Don’t make the mistake of including too many different colors and decorating styles. Mixing styles and colors clearly detracts from the appeal of your patio or deck.

Stick to one combination of colors and decorating styles for a much more attractive and cohesive result.

Using Too Much or Too Little Furniture

Some people use their patio or deck to accumulate furniture that they no longer use. A big mistake.  In fact, some look more like a garden furniture market than a homogeneous outdoor space with carefully selected outdoor furniture.

If you really want to use this outdoor space in the spring or summer, choose to place a set of garden furniture of a certain style and leave out the typical sofa you used in your old house or the old table in your house.

Not Putting Plants

When planning an outdoor space, you may have thought that you will need to include a set of garden furniture such as a large convenient table that allows you to eat on it or a set of chairs or garden sofas.

What else might be missing? The answer is simple: plants. How about adding some potted plants or putting some trees around if you have more space?

These plants will help you create a much more inviting environment.

Coosing Seating Based on Aesthetics Alone

When it comes to choosing seating for your outdoor patio or deck, you should consider both aesthetics and functionality.

If a chair or lounge chair has a beautiful design and you think it’s the best fit for your patio, you need to make sure it’s comfortable enough to use when you need it. Without comfortable seating, chances are you won’t be using your deck or outdoor patio very often this summer.

Forgetting About Functionality

There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to decorating your outdoor deck or patio. Instead, you need to design it according to your own needs.

If you’re planning to have a casual dinner party with family or friends outdoors this summer, you need to design it with the idea that you need to accommodate these people.

If you live alone, you’ll have it a little easier; you can choose to decorate a small outdoor space to feel comfortable both relaxing and doing other activities like having breakfast or dinner in that space. Proper sizing will help you get the most out of your deck while minimizing maintenance and upkeep requirements.

Impersonality

Many people forget that patios are an extension of the home or building and should be just as inviting.

Cold, impersonal spaces don’t invite you to linger. That’s why it’s important to give the space character through decoration and attention to detail. A few outdoor cushions, intimate lighting and plants will help.

With those common mistakes, you can be sure that you will make a perfect job decorating your patio. Do you want to learn some more mistakes to avoid? Come back to check out the second part of our article.
